Julie and Zach Ertz formed their family foundation in 2018 following Zach's life changing service trip to Haiti. Their organization has three pillars of focus. First, they are committed to creating sports opportunities for kids who lack them. Second, they provide educational opportunities for youth of all ages. And third, they are restoring hope and building communities for families who need it most.
Recently, they launched a new initiative called the City of Love Fund. It's the Ertz Family Foundation's grant-making arm that provides funding to local Philadelphia area charities that offer services in the areas of youth education, sports, and family enrichment. The objective is to better equip the thousands of existing nonprofits in Greater Philadelphia so that they can serve their beneficiaries as best as they can. After all, local organizations often know their communities' needs the best, but they usually lack the funding they need to grow and improve their programs. Enter Julie and Zach. "The City of Love Fund’s goal is to help make a more pronounced and measurable impact in the communities and families in which these organizations serve for a better and greater Philadelphia."

Why We Like It
If you've followed us for some time, you may know that we don't always advise that an athlete start a nonprofit right away. There are so many existing local organizations that are doing great work, and yet another organization isn't always the best solution. However, Julie and Zach Ertz's City of Love Fund is exactly the kind of initiative we love at Philanthropy Playmakers. The fund will allow money that they raise through their influence and platforms to be redirected to community organizations with programs already in place. For now, they are having a major impact in Philadelphia without having to create and manage their own unique programs. It's smart, efficient, and powerful.
