Washington Redskins cornerback Josh Norman and New Orleans Saints linebacker Demario Davis, have helped post bail for an immigration activist who has been detained since May. Jose Bello, a 22 year old farmworker, was arrested by ICE agents in May after publicly criticizing the agency. Bello has been forced to suspend his classes and has been separated from his 1-year old son.
Just this week, Bello’s bail of $50,000 was paid by an accumulation of the New York Immigrant Freedom Fund, the National Bail Fund Network, and two unlikely donors - Norman and Davis. The pair belongs to the Players Coalition, a task force formed by former NFL wide receiver Anquan Boldin and Eagles safety Malcom Jenkins. The Coalition champions social justice and racial equality and has provided NFL players a platform to investigate and act on issues they care deeply about. In June, Norman and Davis visited an immigration center along the Texas-Mexico border and shortly thereafter, Norman made a $18,000 donation. After Bello’s release, Norman tweeted “ICE is using detention and deportation as weapons to silence immigrant activists,” he wrote, in part. “… The contributions we are making help support your fight for peace and sanctuary; we will continue until that work is done!”
Why We Like It
Athlete Activism continues to grow and diversify across the country. The tension in the political and social landscape today seems to be inspiring more and more athletes to speak out on issues all across the board. Not only have Norman and Davis used their social media platforms and made trips to the border, but now they are putting their money where their mouths are, so to speak. Their financial support has had a threefold impact: it’s changed Bello’s current situation, it’s emboldened Bello and other activists to keep fighting, and it’s an example to other professional athletes of the power they have to affect change.
