Amidst a crazy trade season, one player and his family have doubled down on their adopted city. Steph and Ayesha Curry have launched a new nonprofit in Oakland, CA whose mission is to address three areas of healthy childhood: nutrition, education, and recreation. The Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation is not the Currys' first foray into major philanthropy. Their family foundation launched earlier this year as a vehicle to provide scholarships to young women pursuing careers in STEM. This new endeavor appropriately mixes Steph's interest area (fitness) with Ayesha's (nutrition) to create an educational program to help encourage healthy lifestyles and address childhood hunger.
In their press release, the Currys said “Children are our future and we are deeply dedicated to empowering them and opening doors for their futures. This organization is all about instilling ongoing tangible change for underprivileged children growing up in the Bay Area and beyond. As parents, we see a multitude of unique opportunities our kids have access to, and our hope is that Eat. Learn. Play. and the critical fundamental development tools it provides will positively impact children in our community to live out their dreams.” The Currys have committed to making a seven-figure donation to the foundation every year to cover overhead costs.
Why We Like It
Steph and Ayesha Curry are largely known as one of the sports & entertainment industry's most powerful couples. Steph Curry has had an illustrious career on the court, coupled with major brand partnerships, and news-worthy opinions on politics and social justice issues. Ayesha Curry is a star in her own right, making a name for herself in the cooking world with a cookbook, TV show, and multi-location restaurant. Still, they have taken their time to make such major investments in their community. They took more than two years to think through their passion areas and made thoughtful decisions on the issues they wanted to help. Further, Eat. Learn. Play. will partner with existing Oakland organizations to deliver programming in the area. This kind of partnership allows the Currys to support with their financial and time resources while enabling established organizations to execute projects and initiatives.
